In the month of March, we continue strengthening vocabulary and encouraging reading among our users within the framework of the DLAN Reads project, co-financed by the Ministry of Culture. A continuous learning process that includes revisiting the content that has been read and repeatedly checking the understanding of words and the overall text is essential for consolidating new knowledge in the field of reading literacy among persons who are deafblind.
At the same time, it also contributes significantly to strengthening their expression and enriching their inner world through learning new words.
At today’s workshop, we therefore revisited two-thirds of the story Veveriček posebne sorte by Svetlana Makarovič and created space for a conversation about the text. During the discussion, users also shared their everyday experiences and emphasized that they are becoming increasingly attentive to moments when they do not understand something while following the news, reading, or communicating with others. They are also becoming more courageous in asking questions.
We believe that such workshops provide important support to users in realizing that it is never too late to learn. The right to language and understanding is a fundamental right that belongs to every individual. Asking questions and exploring one’s understanding means walking the path of empowerment. Remaining in silence, however, often reinforces a passive role in which users, due to past negative experiences, frequently remain.
The experiences they gain at the day centre of the Deafblind Association of Slovenia DLAN show them that although silence is part of their everyday life, it does not necessarily have to become their choice in communication with the world.
