Strengthening language learning among people who are deafblind is an important tool not only for professionals, family members, and other significant individuals who work with people with deafblindness, but above all for the users themselves.

At the Deafblind Association of Slovenia DLAN, learning new haptic signs enables users to achieve better orientation in the external environment and to communicate more easily with others.

At today’s workshop on learning the haptic way of communication, co-financed by the Ministry of Culture, users practiced and further developed the haptic signs they had already learned and were introduced to new ones. For many participants, the learning process is demanding and often burdened by negative experiences from the past. Memories of feelings of helplessness and personal inadequacy can affect their self-image and reduce confidence in their own abilities.

For this reason, the staff strive to work together with users to build a positive experience of learning the language of the deafblind. Direct contact with another person first requires the establishment of trust and a safe space where a person with deafblindness can develop relaxation, curiosity, and the courage to learn.

Therefore, during today’s workshop we created a relaxed atmosphere filled with humor and positive energy, which contributed greatly to a positive climate and motivation for further learning.
