In February, the Deafblind Association of Slovenia DLAN continued regular learning of haptic communication as part of the project The Deafblind Language as a Means of Inclusion for Deafblind People, funded by the Ministry of Culture.

Learning the language is a significant challenge for a deafblind person, requiring continuity, patience from all participants, and support from their environment.

Through various life situations, deafblind individuals often gain the experience that not all information is accessible to them and that they frequently remain in a passive role – receiving only what their surroundings provide. In such a world, it is difficult to reflect on personal needs or ask questions; people often develop strategies to survive in an environment where key information is limited.

Being alone is one of the most painful human experiences. Learning haptic signs therefore plays an important role in developing communication skills that allow individuals to adapt their environment and connect with others – enabling everyone to be understood and included.

Every month, it becomes clear how challenging it is for participants to trust their own abilities when learning new competencies. Through support and verbal acknowledgment of their progress, we help them reflect on their growth process and recognize how it positively impacts their quality of life.
