As part of the DLAN READS 2 project, funded by the Ministry of Culture, we organized a cultural visit to the National Museum of Slovenia.
Before the guided tour, prepared for the users of the Deafblind Association of Slovenia DLAN by curator Tea Černe, participants viewed the statue of Janez Vajkard Valvasor installed on the Museum Plaza. During this, they refreshed their knowledge from a previous workshop, where we discussed his significant contribution to the development of Slovenian culture and heritage.
The guided museum tour then took us through the early development of humanity, the eras of ancient Egypt and Rome, and presented their ways of life. The museum visit was adapted for deafblind participants – parts of the exhibition could be experienced tactilely and through other senses, such as smell.
Participants explored Egyptian deities, smelled fragrances used in mummification, as well as spices and sauce patterns from ancient Rome, discovering their culinary culture through these sensory experiences. They also encountered Braille materials that allowed deafblind visitors to engage even more deeply with history. A special highlight was trying on clothing from ancient Rome, further enriching the experience.
We sincerely thank curator Tea Černe and the National Museum of Slovenia for providing an inclusive cultural experience for deafblind people. Collaborations like this demonstrate that we can co-create environments where information and experiences are accessible to everyone.
